How to create a good storyline for your movie

In filmmaking, the writing of the script is the most important thing. It is impossible to make a good film without a good script. Hollywood studios sometimes resort to mediocre scripts because they have star actors, and getting an audience is guaranteed anyway. But since you are probably an independent filmmaker, you will need to do more than that.

In this article, you will learn how you can write a good story for your film.

But before we go any further, we'd like to advise you to visit the other categories of our site - there you'll find useful guides on making movies or creating video blogs. Also, don't forget to visit our sections with free video templates - for example, you can download hundreds of ready-made projects for Final Cut Pro or Apple Motion (go to the section) - it will definitely help you create your own cinematic projects!

Explore the key components of a film idea

Often problems arise because you want to come up with an entire film at once, rather than starting with the basic elements and developing the idea gradually. A lot of films are a mix and match of three components that make for a new film: location, character and conflict. But sometimes one unusual element is enough to get things started.

To summarize this point, you need to focus your attention on the following three main things:

  • Place - where the action of the film takes place in time and space. In other words, you need to think about a quality setting.
  • Protagonist - who will be the main character? Don't rush to come up with personalities, as a general outline will suffice at first.
  • Conflict - you need to determine what the main character strives for.

Decide on the genre

The genre determines the subject matter of the film. Often a film will fall into more than one genre, but the traits of one always dominate. Genres include comedies, romantic stories, science fiction, action movies, horror movies, dramas and documentaries, but there can also be combinations like romantic or tragicomedy, action movies with horror elements. The beauty of genres is that they help develop the plot of the film, allow you to focus on one thing. For example:

Do you like horror movies? In that case, the idea for the film should include a good villain. Come up with a monster or a negative hero and your idea is ready.

Do you like romantic comedies? Think of a guy and a girl who think they can't fall in love with each other (for all sorts of reasons)

Love science fiction? Come up with a non-existent technology like time travel, spaceships, teleportation, or a device to create new planets. Your story will be a consequence of the emergence of such technology.

Don't strive for perfect results and instant approval

There are people who care about other people's evaluation, opinion and approval. They think they just have to do everything perfectly and demand some incredible quality from themselves. In fact, you don't have to write the way you'd like right away. Accept the fact that if you want to get a good result, you will have to rewrite your work a huge number of times. That's the cost of being a filmmaker.

Work on your dialogues intelligently

When working with dialogues, many people often have problems. Give your brain some cues. For example, visualize characters and imagine real people. Do your own casting (mentally), select actors who in your opinion are ideal for the roles you want. And write the script, keeping in mind the timbre of their voice and features of speech.
Print out their photos and sign each character. Use images of people who live in the same country as you (or have a similar mentality) so it's easier to work with.

Once you've created the story, it's time to get ready to make the film. If you don't know how to do it, you can find a lot of useful guides on our website that will teach you how to do this interesting thing.
